School Council

Medway Student Council

Medway's student council exists to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organising and carrying out school activities and service projects. In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare, the student council is the voice of the student body.

Class meetings

At the fortnightly class council meetings, we share and discuss ideas for ways to improve our school. The class council representative records ideas in our class council files to send to the next Student Council meeting for discussion.

Student Council

Student council meet once monthly to discuss the ideas, decide on the most effective ways to change and improve the school, and then talk to the people who can help to make it happen. Student council regularly share news and information about new initiatives and the important things which are achieved.

Elections

  • Elections will be run without prejudice or discrimination.
  • Any class member is entitled to run for the School Council and the decision in each class will be made by a secret ballot.
  • Children wishing to be considered for the School Council will need to present to their class giving clear reasons and examples of why they are the most suitable candidate for the job.

Officers

Our vision for the student council is to empower students to voice opinions, develop leadership skills and develop new initiatives around the school to enhance student experience. Once elected on to the School Council as board members, children will be able to apply for specific job roles within the organisation:

  • Chairperson (Responsibilities include leading the meetings, and ensuring all are involved)
  • Vice-Chairperson (Responsibilities include assisting the Chairperson prepare the agenda and helping them to lead meetings)
  • Secretary (Responsibilities include keeping minutes of meetings, and arranging the date of subsequent meetings)

These roles will be elected by the board using the same election process as for the School Council.

Meetings

  • Student council will meet every two weeks. These meetings will last a minimum of 15 minutes.
  • Should additional meetings be required, these will be called as necessary.
  • The venue and time of meetings will be agreed at the beginning of each school year.
  • For decisions to be made at a meeting, there must be at least 6 members present and decisions are made through a “show of hands” vote in which the majority rules.
  • Class meetings should be held once a month to discuss and share ideas and feedback.
