At Medway, we will help your child achieve the very best they can at school. You know your child best and may feel they need some additional support. A child is considered to have Special Educational Needs if they have learning difficulties that make it significantly harder for them to learn compared to most children of the same age. These difficulties may come in different forms and could be emotional, sensory, physical or communication based. Medical needs which may slow a child's progress are also considered to be special educational needs.
This information will inform you of the types of support available for your child at Medway and how this can be accessed.
The changes in the Children and Families Bill affect the way children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are supported in school. The new approach began in September 2014 and places pupils at the centre of planning.
- Young people and their families should be involved in discussions about the support they need, so they can share their knowledge and feed back to the school on the young person’s progress.
- Education, health and care plans (EHC) will replace statements of special educational needs. New assessments for additional educational needs will follow the EHC guidelines from September 2014.
- School Action and School Action Plus have been replaced by a single school-based category for children who need extra specialist support.
Not all children with special educational needs are lower attaining. However, they face additional barriers to learning which we can support them in overcoming.
We are additionally supported by the Leicester City Authority.
